Foundation Teaching and Learning News 2025

Term 2 2025

Inquiry Learning

In Foundation, students have been exploring the big idea of ‘Where We Live’, focusing on the different animals in our world and the unique features that help them survive in their environments. We went on a critter walk around our school and found some different invertebrates! We’ve also been investigating a variety of habitats – such as oceans, deserts, and rainforests – and what makes them suitable for different kinds of animals. Later this term, students will use their knowledge to design and create their very own animal habitat dioramas. We can’t wait to see their creativity and understanding come to life!

Mathematics

In Foundation, we’ve been having lots of fun finishing up our unit on Numbers to 20! We’ve explored ordinal numbers and held exciting class competitions to see who came 1st, 2nd, and 3rd — there was lots of cheering and celebrating! Now, we’ve jumped into our next unit on Shapes. The students have loved getting hands on with different materials to discover the wonderful world of 2D shapes and 3D objects.

Literacy & Anzac Day

Our Foundation students have proudly completed Stage 2 of their letter sounds and are continuing to build their phonics knowledge with the introduction of the letter sound ‘L’ this term. We have also been revisiting and reviewing all the sounds we’ve learned so far to strengthen our reading and writing skills. To mark ANZAC Day, students listened to the story ANZAC Ted and engaged in a meaningful discussion about the importance of ANZAC Day and why we commemorate it. They then created their very own ANZAC Ted craft to honour the occasion.

Term 1 2025

Mathematics

In Mathematics the Foundation students have been exploring the concept of time through a range of engaging activities. They have been learning to recognise the different parts of the day, such as morning, afternoon and night and identifying tasks they complete during each part of the day. The students have also become familiar with the days of the week and learned which specialist classes they have on each day. They have explored key time related concepts like before and after and compared the duration of different events. This helps them develop a deeper understanding of how time influences their everyday lives. We are so proud of all of the mathematical learning our Foundation students have achieved in Term 1!

Literacy and Harmony Week

In literacy, our Foundation students have been working hard to strengthen their understanding of letter sounds and they are now incorporating this knowledge into their writing! Recently, they focused on the letter sound /b/ and the learning experience was made extra special by taking it outdoors. The students had a fantastic time dancing and running around in bubbles with all of the Foundation classes, allowing them to experience the b sound in a fun and engaging way. The excitement of the bubbles and movement helped them connect with the sound and then they put their creative thoughts into writing. After the activity, each student was able to write about their experience, showcasing both their writing skills and their understanding of the b sound.

Foundation students also learned about Harmony Day. To mark the occasion, they created special crowns with the theme Everybody Belongs, which they proudly wore during the day. It was a lovely way to reinforce the importance of inclusion and unity in our school community.

Inquiry Learning

Foundation students have been exploring and learning about different people in our school community. They have increased their ability to ask for help and have identified trusted adults who can help them at our school.

Personal and Social Learning

The Foundation students showed excellent responsibility when they left the school for the first time to attend their STOMP dance workshop. They followed teachers' guidance to ensure a safe arrival. Students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and showed respect, listening attentively to and following the instructions from their STOMP dance instructors. Foundation students have also been learning to follow school routines and expectations in the classroom, including following our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Learning. Well done to our Foundation students on such a great first four weeks at school.

Routines for Success

Learning Community 2 was buzzing with excitement as our youngest learners, the Foundation students, began their adventure at Avondale Primary School. The first few weeks have been full of laughter, exploration and building new friendships. Whether in the classroom or on the playground, our Foundation students have been enthusiastically discovering all that school life has to offer. Here’s to a wonderful start for our Foundation students and to many more weeks of fun and learning to come!
