Foundation Teaching and Learning News 2026

Term 2 2026

Mathematics

Foundation students have been learning about statistics through lots of engaging hands-on activities. Students have been asking questions, collecting data and making simple graphs with their classmates. We have explored different ways to sort and display information using materials, such as unifix blocks, counters and sticky notes. Students have enjoyed sharing their ideas, counting results and talking about what they noticed in their graphs.

English

Foundation students have been using the story Where the Lyrebird Lives to inspire their writing and drawing. Students explored different parts of a sentence, including the when, who, what is happening, and where. They also used rich descriptive language from the story to create their own imaginative habitat sentences and animal sounds. Students loved bringing their ideas to life through their writing and illustrations.

Personal and Social Learning

Foundation students have been learning about what being brave looks like and how it feels to do something that might

be scary. As part of the Respectful Relationships curriculum, we have discussed that it’s okay to feel nervous and that

being brave means giving things a go even when we feel unsure. Students have shared ideas, listened to stories and

explored simple strategies to help them in these moments, such as asking for help or using positive self-talk.

Inquiry Learning

Foundation students have been learning about “Where We Live” and exploring places in their community. They have been making connections to special places they love, sharing why these places are important to them through discussion, drawing and writing. They have enjoyed talking about why these places are special and what they like to do there.

Term 1 2026

English

In Foundation, we have been learning our first stage of letter sounds and building strong foundations for reading and writing. Students have been actively engaged in fun, hands-on activities including whole class chants, crafts, and interactive games to help consolidate their learning. We have also loved meeting Milo’s new friends from the Little Learners Love Literacy program, who he would like to invite to his party! The students have been very excited to get to know each character and connect them to the letter sounds they represent. It has been wonderful to see students beginning to use their letter sounds to help them write simple sentences. We are so proud of their enthusiasm and growing confidence as young readers and writers!

Inquiry Learning

In Foundation, we have been learning about how people help each other in our school community. We have explored the different ways students, teachers, and staff support one another and why this is important. We have also been learning how to ask for help in different situations, practising the words and actions we can use when we need support. This helps us understand how our community works together and how we can be a caring part of it.

Mathematics

Our Foundation students have had a fantastic start to learning about Mathematics! Over the first few weeks, we have been learning to recognise collections up to 6, practising our subitising skills (seeing how many without needing to count). We’ve been playing lots of fun maths games with partners to build our number confidence and take turns, and we’ve also been exploring and getting to know our maths equipment. It has been wonderful to see the students building their confidence and enthusiasm for learning maths!

Routines for Success

Our Foundation students have had a fantastic first week of school! They have been busy getting to know their classmates, making new friends and building confidence in their new classroom environment. We’ve played lots of games, started learning our classroom routines, explored our learning spaces and practiced how to be safe, respectful learners. It has been wonderful to see everyone settling into school life! We are so proud of our new Foundation students.
