Hello to our Avondale community,
We welcome our students and families back to Term 3, where we are proud to share the smooth transition our students have made after the holidays, settling back into school routines and demonstrating a positive attitude through our School Values of respect, responsibility and learning.
Today, our school community came together to support National Pyjama Day, raising funds and awareness for children living in foster care. It was fantastic to see students and staff dressed in their pyjamas while contributing to such an important cause. Thank you to all families for your generosity and support in raising $416.60. We also thank our Student Representative Council for promoting this whole school event in their classrooms and at Assembly.
During Week 1 we recognised and celebrated NAIDOC Week, providing valuable opportunities for students to learn about and honour the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We encourage families to read the Teaching and Learning section later in this newsletter to engage in the range of learning experiences that students have engaged in across our school.
We invite parents, carers and guardians of students in Grades 2-4 to join our Multiplicative Thinking Workshop, facilitated by Sarah Carroll Learning Specialist and Margarita Breed Mathematics Consultant. We look forward to meeting our families at the Parent/Carer/Guardian conferences next Wednesday and are excited to learn together in Term 3. Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support.
This week, we were excited to see the installation of two new bike racks which have been purchased using money raised through our fundraising events supported by our school community. The additional racks provide bicycle parking for our students to park their bikes in a secure space during the school day.
NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It is the only national assessment that all Australian children undertake. Literacy and numeracy skills are the critical foundation for all learning and for the ability to participate effectively in society. NAPLAN questions assess content aligned with the Australian Curriculum in English and Mathematics. NAPLAN tests are only one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process. As they are held once every 2 years for each student, they cannot replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. Your child’s teacher will have the best understanding of your child’s educational progress. NAPLAN individual student reports have been provided for families of our Grades 3 and 5 students and can be used to discuss your child’s progress with their teacher at our upcoming Parent/Carer/Guardian Teacher Conferences.
This year’s Book Week celebrations are held between Saturday 22 to Saturday 28 August, with the theme, Symphony of Stories! Our annual Book Week Parade will be held on Tuesday 25 August from 9am in the Avondale Heights Gymnasium next to the Library (corner of Clarendon Street and Military Road). All families are invited to attend this event. A prize will be awarded to one student in each grade, for the costume that best demonstrates this year’s theme, with an emphasis on creative, homemade costumes. See what you can create using bits and pieces around your home, with very little cost involved. Simple is often most effective.
